Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Backlash
Figures from across the partisan divide and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a vile and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Party
A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the killing of a different political figure.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
