India's capital Rises to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of Delhi registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the healthy threshold set by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, representing 15-20x above safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts

For the past four years, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly smog that covers the city as winter sets in.

Yet in recent months, the recently formed local leadership approached the highest court to propose a modification of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".

Legal Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements seen during celebrations in at least three years.

Regional Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe records ever measured in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air descends.

Health and Economic Consequences

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is enormous, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be causing approximately 10k premature fatalities per year in the city.
