Leeds Keep Liverpool at Arm's Length to Earn Valuable Draw at Anfield
A pair of unbeaten runs remained intact at Anfield, however only one side could take genuine satisfaction from the result. Leeds United executed a perfect strategy of frustrating and containing the hosts, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering limitations behind the reigning title holders' recent upturn.
Defensive Display Earns Crucial Point
A lacklustre goalless stalemate, the first in 84 matches for Liverpool, was primarily attributable to the immense dominance of the outstanding centre-back pairing Struijk and Bijol, coupled with the Anfield side's inability to break down a compact Leeds defence. Liverpool were limited to hopeful opportunities, and a sprinkling of boos echoed around the stadium at the final whistle on a sluggish display.
"If I do not utilise the whole squad and we have a fixture list like this, I would never do this," Daniel Farke explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all know his past history was difficult. He is in red-hot form but it's important I look after him and sometimes the mind needs to prevail over the heart."
Liverpool's Frustration in Front of Goal
Arne Slot's team at first displayed more zip and precision than in recent outings, with the right wing-back influential on the right side. However, golden chances were scarce. Their best openings in the first period involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- After a neat one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and drew a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The Leeds' shot-stopper could not hold the shot, requiring a crucial intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the rebound.
- Ekitiké later raced clear onto a ball over the top but was held by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his shouts for a spot-kick were dismissed.
Missed Chances Are Costly
Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he did not manage to hit the net with his best chance. Meeting a swift Frimpong cross in the goal area, the attacker miscued a header that hit the Perri while facing an unguarded net.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity came from an Liverpool goalkeeper mistake. The Brazilian keeper played a careless pass straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort back down the centre was saved by the alert goalkeeper.
Scrappy Final Stages
The contest deteriorated into a scrappy encounter, low on quality. Dominik Szoboszlai, back from suspension, forced a save from Perri from distance. The resulting rebound led to Ampadu controlling the ball, giving the hosts a free-kick in a promising position, which Wirtz wasted into the defence.
Slot introduced a triple substitution to inject impetus, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his side in front from a corner, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had extended his scoring streak for Leeds in the final stages, but his finish was flagged out for a marginal offside call. In the end, the two teams had to accept a share of the points.
