The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
