Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be low, so warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People should to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this meant the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
