A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
