Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the south-west.

This situation come after recent bushfires in another state, which caused the destruction of homes and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for later this week in areas within SA and NSW, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, bringing intense sunshine to much of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken heat presents a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into darkness recently after powerful gusts damaged the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to create ongoing problems as utility companies scramble to restore power to more than 1 million residents.

Unusual Fog Covers Sunny Area

Meanwhile, a region famed for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on record. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a key transport hub below 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The extended fog has been driven by exceptional autumn precipitation that resulted in soils saturated.

And in another country, a powerful storm has brought intense rain, strong gales and even snow to a group of islands – weather many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system brought some of the heaviest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, strong northerly winds swept across the archipelago, with gusts reaching 50mph observed on multiple islands. The influence of the storm is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions taking hold.
