Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
